Course Requests

1. Before the registration period each quarter, the MPCS will send out the Course Selection Survey where students can choose MPCS classes for the upcomming quarter. The survey is the bidding process used for MPCS classes.
2. You will be pre-registered into the classes that you select in the Course Selection Survey. These registrations are non-binding and changes can be made during the registration period.
3. You will not be registered into classes where you don't meet the prerequisites or have scheduling conflicts.
4. We will use your ranking preferences for class placement. Please rank carefully and in order of priority.
5. There is high demand for many MPCS classes. Not all students will get spots in requested classes. This is where ranking is important. Waitlists will be created for any class where students did not get a seat because of space. 
6. Once registration opens, you may make changes to your pre-registration.
7. If you did not complete the Course Selection Survey, you may select classes during the registration period.
8. If a class you want to take filled through the Course Selection Survey you may add your name to the waitlist through the MPCS Registration Form. Your name will be added AFTER all those who selected the class through the Course Selection Survey but did not get a space.
9. Any changes to your registration that need to be made outside of the registration period or the first week of the quarter, must be made through the MPCS Registration Form.

Course requests for any non-MPCS class should follow the instuctions on the MPCS Student Course Requests page. 

The MPCS Registration Form is used for the following:

1. If you would like to add or drop a class outside of the registration period or the first week of classes.

2. If you would like to add your name to the waitlist for a class.

2. Not all MPCS are available to non-MPCS students. If the class you wish to take is not listed, it is not open for non-MPCS students. Do not contact the instructor.
3. Receive a response from the MPCS. If it is a deny, do not contact the instructor. 
4. If the response is an approval, look for further instructions in the approval email. This approval is going to be usually based on space available and we might not be able to give final approval until the first week of the quarter.
5. Approvals may require placement exams or a recommendation from a Lab School instructor. 
6. Once final approval is given, the Lab School form can be completed by the MPCS administration. Contact us at admin-mpcs@lists.uchicago.edu. Do not contact individual instructors to complete the form.

Please note that first-time Lab School students must be endorsed by a CS teacher at Lab. This does not have to be a formal letter of recommendation, but we need your CS teacher to endorse that you're qualified to undertake a rigorous and challenging MS-level class. MPCS Alumni are allowed to audit one course each academic year with permission from the MPCS administration. Do not contact individual instructors with audit requests. 

If approved, as an auditor you may sit in on the class, but you will not be able to turn in homework, take exams, or receive a grade. An audited class will not appear on your transcript. There are no fees to audit as an alum. 

Approval is based on space availability in the course. Not all courses are available for audit. Approval to audit is not granted until registration has been completed. Auditors will not be allowed in courses that have reached the enrollment limit or have waitlists.
