NEW STUDENT UPDATES & INFORMATION - JULY 16, 2021

AUTUMN 2021 STUDENT LOCATION SURVEY

For Autumn 2021 course planning we are trying to get an idea of where MPCS students will be located and taking classes from in the fall. This will help us plan for classroom space and remote options. Responses to this survey are non-binding and can be updated at any time. We would just like to understand, as of today, where you expect to be this fall and your preference for in-person or remote learning. The survey should take no more than a minute or two to complete.

AUTUMN 2021 COURSE PRE-REGISTRATION SURVEY

The MPCS uses a pre-registration system to place students into classes, as well as to get an estimated headcount for each class. Ordinarily, pre-registration runs for a single week halfway through the quarter but, for Autumn 2021, pre-registration will remain open for most of the summer. While pre-registration won’t close until August 20th, we ask that you please enter your tentative pre-registration choices as soon as possible, as this will help us with course planning (including deciding whether to open additional sections of any classes).

You can enter your pre-registration choices by logging into the following website (using the "Sign in" link on the top bar, and entering your UChicago CNetID and password): https://mpcs-courses.cs.uchicago.edu/

If you have not yet claimed your CNetID you can do so here: https://cnet.uchicago.edu/claimacct/. If you are unable to log into the MPCS Courses website with your CNetID and password, you may need to request that your CS account be activated. You can do so through the following page: https://account-request.cs.uchicago.edu/account/requests

Once you have logged in, you can enter your pre-registration choices in this page: https://mpcs-courses.cs.uchicago.edu/2021-22/autumn/my_requests

(if you’d like to review the syllabuses for the Autumn 2021 classes, you can do so here: https://mpcs-courses.cs.uchicago.edu/2021-22/autumn/courses)

You will be presented with a simple form asking you how many courses you intend to take in the Autumn quarter, and a list of courses for you to rank. Please note that the ranking is significant: the higher you rank a class, the more likely it is you will be pre-registered into that class.

Please note that if it is critically important that you get into a class (e.g., because of a graduation requirement), you must rank it as your #1 class.

You can also select more courses than the number you intend to take (but we will make every effort to place you in your top-ranked courses). Make sure you click on "Change preferences" to save your course selection.

New MPCS students MUST take 3 core classes before taking any elective courses. Selections for elective courses will be removed.

The deadline to select your courses is Friday, August 20th, at 11:59pm CDT.

However, as noted above, you should go ahead and enter your tentative pre-registration choices right away. If you are unsure about the exact classes you’d like to take in the Autumn, please just enter your most likely choices at the moment, which you will be able to edit as many times as you want before August 20th. We also ask that you please defer any course planning questions until after the course planning session for new students (mentioned below).

IMPORTANT: Pre-registration is not registration. An initial registration will be made based on your pre-registration choices and the results of your placement exams, but you will have a chance to add/drop courses via the university’s regular registration system, which will be open during the week of September 20, 2021.

COURSE PLANNING SESSION FOR NEW MPCS STUDENTS

To help with your Autumn course selection, MPCS Associate Director, Lamont Samuels, will lead a Course Planning session to walk through requirements for new students, topics covered in all classes, and how to start thinking about the courses you want to take this Autumn.

While this is not a mandatory event, we encourage all new students to try and make this session.

AUTUMN 2021 PLACEMENT EXAMS UPDATE

The programming and the math placement exams will be held ONLINE for Autumn 2021.

We have been hearing from many students that they will not be able to arrive in Chicago in time for the exams. Since all students need to take the exam in the same format, both exams will be given to all students online. There will be space reserved for students to take the exams in a classroom or in the computer lab if you would like to take them on campus, in-person, however it will be the same exam and in the same format as students taking the exams remotely. All new students are expected to take the exams at these times.

PROGRAMMING PLACEMENT EXAM
Monday, September 13th, 6PM CDT
Exam will be online and will last 90 mins within the two hour window above.

MATH PLACEMENT EXAM
Tuesday, September 14th, 6PM CDT Online
Exam will be online and will last two hours. Access to a printer or scanner will be helpful, but not essential.

AUTUMN 2021 NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

Save the Date!

We will be holding an in-person orientation event on Thursday, September 23rd in Crerar Library, home to the MPCS and the CS Department.

Details are still being finalized, however, we expect to have an in-person orientation presentation and a dinner meet and greet for all new students, MPCS faculty, leadership and staff.

If you plan to be in Chicago for the Autumn 2021 quarter it will be a wonderful welcome to the program!

Please reach out to us at masters-admin@cs.uchicago.edu with any questions.
